Through the years, Mattias Pollak has transitioned from shooting short films and art projects to working as Director of Photography on feature films like ’’Explosions in the Heart’’ and ’’Live a Little’’—the latter shot across four European capitals during an ambitious Interrail production. His career has been shaped by a mix of artistic curiosity and on-the-ground experience, gradually establishing himself among Scandinavia’s emerging cinematographers in narrative features.
Mattias discovered cinematography during his time at Stockholm Film School, where he first picked up a camera to help classmates shoot their short films. What began as a practical choice quickly became a lifelong pursuit. Drawn to the emotional power of visual storytelling, he later continued his studies at the Norwegian Film School, where he deepened both his technical craft and confidence in his own creative voice.
His work is defined by a strong sense of mood and emotion. Often shooting handheld, Mattias brings a quiet intensity to the frame—his camera steady, observant and responsive to the rhythm of the actors. He finds inspiration in art that blends raw realism with poetry—films by Andrea Arnold, Nan Goldin’s photography or the late sun casting red light on concrete.
Mattias is involved throughout the process, from early script analysis to the final shot. He believes strong cinematography comes from a deep understanding of the story and its characters.
On set, he’s a gentle, collaborative and dedicated presence—always focused on what serves the story best. He thrives under pressure and finds energy in long takes, tight spaces and the unpredictable rhythm of real life.
